Whitney Whitney Sees Right Through Your Girlfriend in “Isabelle”

Haven’t we all had that friend that is dating someone we absolutely cannot stand? Whilst our friend is blinded by love and rose-colored glasses, we from the outside can’t help but see all the flaws and bad intentions their love has. Worst of all - all we can do is sit and pray that our friends will realize the truth and be there for them with ice-cream and advice.

If this story hits close to home, then Whitney Whitney’s newest single “Isabelle” is made for you.

Raised between Connecticut and New York, the now LA-based singer is making songs that are straight out of an intimate and relatable journal entry, yet have a certain classic and dramatic flair to them. Having released “1.1,” her debut EP and first part of her debut album this summer, Whitney Whitney is back and indicating the start of part two.

“Isabelle” is a song that seems stripped back at first, but quickly becomes a dark tale about hating the person your friend is dating and seeing right through them. “I’m always looking for a more unconventional way to say the obvious. It’s a fun challenge for me. Sometimes, the more obscure, the better. Other times, it’s so basic, but it hits harder. I love to experiment with the duality of the obscure and the truth.” And the lyricism of this song is a direct attest to that by claiming that “Oh Isabelle what kind of drug did you put in his cup? Oh you’re not fooling anybody” or “Oh, Isabelle you’re not a good girl, you don’t deserve such a good guy.”

Although a slower pop song, Whitney showcases her vocal prowess with raspy, theatrical tones that embrace her musical theater background, backed by lively guitars and dramatic violins that tap into her love for classical music. The chorus feels like a mix of glitter and sassiness, where Whitney calls Isabelle out and a part of us is hopeful that Whitney’s friend is taking notes and taking action.

Written for all of us that have to deal with our friends choosing the wrong person,  Whitney Whitney's “Isabelle” is out now:
